Calo II

The Calotype Society 2013 (St Salvator's Quad, St Andrews) [8x10" digital print from calotype by Fionnbharr Ó Súilleabháin]

Calo II was held in St Andrew's in early August 2015. Some members met up in Edinburgh for the weekend before. The weather was not great but everyone came away with successful images. The event was organised by Rachel Nordstrom and Richard Cynan Jones and we had the use of the darkroom in the Student Union building which I was amazed to find existed in such a new building. We were treated to a practical demonstration of Charles Long's calotype process by Rob Douglas which several people have since used as it is very fast for a calotype process, although not the most convenient. Rachel Nordstrom very kindly gave us private viewings of some of the calotype albums held by the Library of St Andrew's Special Collections where she works as the Photographic Collections Manager. Towards the end of the week we had a talk from Dr Sara Stevenson about early Scottish photography. Dr Stevenson was chief curator at the National Galleries of Scotland for 36 years and recently published a huge work together with Dr Alison Morrison-Low "Scottish Photography: The First Thirty Years." Despite the weather it was a great week in a very photogenic town. I'm told that the new annual St Andrews Photography Festival was inspired by our event there.
